Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-1872)
Born in Amsterdam, Krieghoff came to Canada in 1837. He created images of Canada, specially landscapes and scenes of First Nations and Habitant life in Quebec, that were eagerly collected in Canada and Europe, and have become familiar icons of an idealized past in the more than 125 years since his death.
His works helped define the Canadian national identity and international image, though from the artist's own perspective.
